ARCD understands that a 10 percent reduction in body weight will reduce disease risk factors.
We target our weight loss goals to be at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week based on a calorie deficit of 500 –1,000 kcal/day. We use various methods in our initial assessment. Typically, our patients will receive blood work for interpretation purposes and to guide treatment. Typically, we get labs measuring thyroid and lipid levels, blood glucose and electrolytes to name a few. Genetic testing is also available if our clinicians deem these tests are necessary.
One device we use for new patient evaluations is the “Med Gem device”. The Med Gem is capable of measuring a patient’s metabolic rate indirectly using calorimetry. This is accomplished by measuring consumed oxygen through the device and typically takes approximately 5-10 minutes. Using this form of metabolic testing we obtain accuracy regarding our patient’s “metabolic state” which provides important feedback regarding their caloric demand.
Effective weight control involves strategies including:
- Dietary and behavior therapy
- Physical activity
- Pharmacotherapy
- Surgery
We take pride in developing treatment plans tailored to each patient to reduce unhealthy weight and re-establish energy balance. Our treatment strategies are used to foster long-term weight control and prevention of weight gain.
Our multidisciplinary team with the combined efforts of patients unite to achieve the goal of becoming a healthier you.
